CHAMPAIGN, IL – September 27, 2025 — The #21 USC Trojans suffered their first loss of the season, falling 34-32 to #23 Illinois in a dramatic, high-scoring affair. After a back-and-forth battle that featured stellar performances from both teams, Illinois capitalized on a late-game strategy to secure the victory.
The Trojans traveled to Illinois looking to continue their unbeaten run, but the Illini, coming off an embarrassing loss the previous week, were determined to bounce back. Makai Lemon, Illinois’ standout receiver and projected first-round pick, put on an offensive clinic, finishing with 11 catches for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. Both of Lemon’s touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, the second of which gave USC a brief 32-31 lead with just 4:26 remaining in the game.
Meanwhile, Waymond Jordan, USC’s reliable running back, continued his strong season with 106 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns. Despite these individual efforts, USC’s offense was unable to manage the clock effectively after Lemon’s touchdown, leaving too much time for Illinois to mount a final drive.
The Illini, starting from their own 20-yard line, methodically moved the ball downfield and drained the clock before setting up a 41-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. The Trojans fall to 4-1 on the season as they head back to the drawing board.
