The Phillies’ season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion after Orion Kerkering’s 11th-inning error cost them Game 4. Cristopher Sánchez took the mound in the win-or-go-home matchup and delivered a strong performance, pitching six innings while allowing five hits, one run, and recording five strikeouts.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh, when the Phillies took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double following a J.T. Realmuto single. In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers tied the game on a bases-loaded walk, and from there, both bullpens went into shutdown mode, sending the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th, Tommy Edman singled with one out, followed by a Max Muncy base hit after a Will Smith lineout. Kiké Hernández then drew a walk to load the bases, setting up a tense moment for Philadelphia. With two outs, Kerkering fielded a slow dribbler but made a costly mistake, throwing home instead of to first. The throw sailed past the catcher and to the backstop, allowing the winning run to score and ending the Phillies’ season.

It was a devastating finish to what had been an exciting and promising year for Philadelphia — a season many believed could finally be the one. As the dust settles, the Phillies now face an offseason filled with tough questions and key decisions ahead.
