LSU was back at Death Valley today face their longtime rivals the Florida Gators. The game started of quite slow and the first touchdown wasn’t until the second quarter after a touchdown from Zavion Thomas, but the offense never really found its rhythm the rest of the night.
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway struggled heavily, throwing 5 interceptions on 49 pass attempts. Despite all the extra possessions, LSU’s offense failed to take full advantage of the turnovers.
A major criticism from the game was LSU’s lack of commitment to the run. Caden Durham was efficient with 93 yards on 15 carries, but the Tigers didn’t utilize backs Harlem Berry or Ju’Juan Johnson nearly enough. A stronger ground game might have helped settle things offensively.
Chris Hilton Jr. was quiet once again — finishing with zero catches. He has yet to eclipse even one total receiving yard on the season.
Garrett Nussmeier had an up-and-down performance, completing 15 of 27 passes for 220 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. While he avoided major mistakes, the offense overall lacked rhythm and explosiveness.
There were still a few bright spots. Aaron Anderson Jr. posted 77 receiving yards, and Durham showed promise in the backfield. On defense, true freshman DJ Pickett came up big with his first career interception — a clutch play in the fourth quarter that helped seal LSU’s win.
With the victory, LSU moves to 3-0 and will look to clean things up before their next game on September 21.
