The Toronto Maple Leafs got off to a hot start against the Detroit Red Wings, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Calle Järnkrok and Nicolas Roy. Carrying momentum into the second, it looked like the Leafs were poised for another big period — but the tide quickly turned.

Detroit’s Marco Kasper opened the scoring for the Red Wings with a quick snapshot, followed by a Lucas Raymond goal that tied the game with just over five minutes left in the period. As Toronto’s defense began to falter, future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane capitalized with a late goal to give Detroit a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.

The Leafs responded early in the third as Max Domi buried a wrister to tie the game 3-3. However, Detroit regained control when Lucas Raymond netted his second goal of the night on a power-play deflection, putting the Red Wings ahead 4-3. Toronto had a chance to tie it late on the power play but couldn’t convert, and their offense went cold in the closing minutes. Detroit added two empty-net goals to seal a 6-3 victory.

The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back in their rematch against the Red Wings this Monday at Scotiabank Arena.
