The Tampa Bay Lightning returned home to face the New Jersey Devils but struggled early as the Devils jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period. Tampa Bay didn’t get on the board until the second period when Yanni Gourde fired in a wrister to make it 3-1. Moments later, Ryan McDonagh added another goal with under three minutes left in the frame, cutting the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final period.

In the third, the Lightning had a prime opportunity to tie the game on a power play, but it quickly turned costly as Devils star Jesper Bratt scored short-handed to extend the lead. Riding that momentum, New Jersey added another goal minutes later to make it 5-2. The Lightning managed one more goal late in regulation, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 6-3 on home ice.

Tampa Bay now drops to 0-2 on the young season and will look to bounce back Monday night against the undefeated Boston Bruins.
