Auston Matthews wasted no time getting back into rhythm, scoring his first goal of the preseason and recording eight shots on goal. It was a strong showing from the Leafs’ star as he shook off the offseason rust.

The real standout of the night, however, was 24-year-old Swedish goaltender Dennis Hildeby. He stopped all 23 shots he faced through two periods, earning a shutout before being replaced.

Despite the promising start, the Maple Leafs ultimately fell 3–2 in overtime. Artur Akhtyamov, who entered in the third period, allowed two goals and surrendered the game-winner in OT. The young prospect is expected to provide depth in net while Joseph Woll remains out.

Of course, it’s just preseason—so there’s no cause for concern yet regarding Akhtyamov’s performance.
